Tensta Konsthall presents the film installation “Who wants to get thrown on the garbage dump?” that is part of the ongoing Järva // project by Patrick Kretschek, Erik Rosshagen and Fredrik Ehlin.

Who cares about a disc golf course?

The disco golf course Järva Disc Golf Park is built on top of Granholmstoppen, a the open green area in Järva just north of the Stockholm suburbs of Hjulsta and Tensta. Granholmstoppen was originally known as Granholmstippen (tippen like the English tip meaning rubbish dump) and served as a dump for rubble and leftover construction waste from the massive building project known as ‘the million program’ (the project begun in 1965 and aimed at building homes for one million people) as wells as materials from the construction of the adjoining planned subway station.
Now in the spring of 2010 the sports facility’s existence is threatened and can, within four years, be forced to give way for a multicultural cemetery. To stop this from happening the driving forces behind the disco golf course, the Löf brothers, have participated anonymously, in the architecture competition for the cemetery with their own suggestion that leaves the whole area of the golf course untouched. The brothers’ strongest argument is that it’s not respectful to bury people under old construction waste. Up until the 23rd of May 2010 you can see all of the one hundred and thirteen suggestions at Ross Tensta Gymnasium.

Järva // project is an ongoing film-, text- and research project which takes as its point of departure Järva and the residential areas surrounding: Hjulsta, Tensta, Rinkeby, Akalla, Husby and Kista. The story of the two brothers Löf, “Who wants to get thrown on the garbage dump?” which will be showing at Tensta Konsthall between the 29th of May and the 10th of July, is part of a series of stories that in the style of a Rubik’s Cube is searching for this sites’ past, current and future.
In connection to already established narratives about the area The Järva // project dwells in its margins aiming at searching new perspectives and tell different stories about the area. The focus is on events which in one way or other don’t fit in with the ideas and discourses that construct the predominant representations of the Järva area and pursue its development in certain directions. Somewhat simplified we can call that discourse the discourse of the multicultural, a construction and an affirmation of the differences in terms of culture. It’s a discourse characterised by a duality that can be used in contradictory ways. In terms of city planning an example of this is the way a multicultural graveyard is being promoted, at the same time as the plans for the extension of the tram line in the same area carefully avoids the areas of suburban housing (with the exception of the meeting point of the IT-city Kista). In these two projects the affirmation of the multicultural meets the devaluation of the social space that this diversity comprises.

The project was initiated by the artist Patrick Kretschek during a residency at Tensta Konsthall in the winter of 2009 and has today developed into a collaboration between him, the artist and filmmaker Erik Rosshagen and the artist and writer Fredrik Ehlin.

- TENSTA KONSTHALL
http://www.tenstakonsthall.se/

MYTH OFREALITY
18 Januari - 25 Januari 2008

DOCUMENTATION OF AN ERROR IN THE SOFTWARE
http://www.mythofreality.se/artists.html

There is something that most probably is an error in the software (a bug). It is a rift in the three-dimensional room that World of Warcraft is built in. The rift is in Stormwind City, one of the capitals in the continent Eastern Kingdoms in World of Warcraft. By jumping up on an invisible edge on one of the city’s walls, the character can get to this rift. If a character manages to do this he will fall down to a place that is below the capital in what appears to be different layers of the 3D-landscape. From there it is possible to see the hollow walls and how the water in the moat near the city ends like a line, how other characters run around high above in what appears to be the air, how the mountains surrounding the city abruptly ends and how the crowns of the trees hangs free in the sky. It reminds of an intersection that clearly shows that every 3D-enviromnent is constructed of surfaces linked together and that with the aid of depth, space, sound and lighting creates the illusion of different materials such as stone, water, mountains and trees. In that place there are other apparent “holes” where the ground and the mountain simply cease to appear. Down in the holes there doesn’t seem to be anything apart from a grey color. If a player allows his character to fall down into such a hole he will fall for a short period of time in what appears to be a space without any points of reference. Finally he will reach a lowest point and at that time the characters figure will fall down and out of the screen, leaving only the “camera” that is the characters p.o.v. (point of view) and which always follows the characters in games like these. This moment is illustrated with what seems to be a deliberate sound effect that sounds like a short gust of wind. This place seems to be the lowest point in the 3D-room of World of Warcraft. An origo from which all the constructions in 3D emanates from. There is only a sky, a sun and a kind of diffuse ground/sea. It is possible to shift sight sideways in what might be the ground level of the entire game. It is also possible to move over the entire continent below the level of where the other players are. The only thing that ends is when the camera reaches the world sea at the end of the continent. Here the gaze is struck with fatigue and if he does not return he will eventually die. This is also the only way to get back to the level where the other players are since all the character’s powers are disabled. There is a background sound that seems to be dependent on which place on the continent the character is at. In most places there is the sound of wind.
It is hard to determine if there is a purpose in leaving the glitch for players to get through with their characters. The bug is known and well documented on the Internet (see link). It is also hard to determine whether the site is deliberately constructed or if it is only the result of a set of plates in a three-dimensional room that by mistake has not been put together. The sound effect of the landing at this place and the fact that Blizzard has not “corrected” the bug by closing the rift indicates that the site is there as a result of someone’s intention.
